Another treat from my 1947 cookbook, “Fun with Cooking”. Even I am not that old.

Yields1 Serving
Prep Time15 minsCook Time30 minsTotal Time45 mins
 ¼ cup Butter
 1 cup Brown sugar
 1 Egg
 1 tsp Vanilla
 ½ cup Flour
 1 tsp Baking powder
 ½ tsp Salt
½ cup Chopped ‘nutmeats’ - usually walnuts or almonds
1

Melt butter in a saucepan over a small flame. Add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Remove from the flame and when the mixture has cooled a little, put in the egg, beating until smooth, then stir in the vanilla.

2

Put a piece of waxed paper on the table and onto it sift the flour, baking powder and salt. Now carefully lift the waxed paper in one hand and pour the flour slowly into the saucepan mixture, stirring all the while with the other hand. When the mixture is well blended, add the nutmeats.

3

Next cut the waxed paper to fit the bottom of a pan about 8” x 8”. Pour the mixture in, spreading it evenly with the back of a spoon. Bake in a medium oven, 350º, for 30 minutes. As soon as you remove it from the oven, cut into squares, taking out each square separately. Be careful of the hot pan!
