I’ve tried some other recipes and they weren’t the same as Grandma's version - the cooked sugar really works to make that delicious caramel flavour.

Yields4 Servings
Prep Time15 mins
 1-1/2 cups Brown sugar
 1 cup Boiling water
 1 pinch Baking soda
 1 Egg, beaten
 1-1/2 cups Milk
 3 tbsp Cornstarch
 1 tsp Vanilla
 1 tsp Butter (optional)
1

Put the sugar in a pot by itself and caramelize. It will turn into a liquid. This part is a little picky because you don’t want it to burn. I usually use a wooden spoon to stir it. Once it’s turned into a liquid, add the boiling water and pinch of baking soda. It will bubble up and steam when you add the water.

2

Mix one beaten egg, milk, cornstarch and vanilla. Put a bit of the hot mixture into the egg mixture and whisk so that the egg blends nicely. Then add the rest and cook, stirrring until it has thickened. If desired, add a spoonful of butter and let it melt in.
